The story behind the Israel Retreat Center (IRC)

Since their first visits in Israel, in the early 2000’s, Lama Ole and his wife Hannah expressed their wish to have a Retreat Center in Israel. A home for Israeli Diamond Way Buddhism practitioners to deepen their meditation practices, develop strong connections with each other and transmit the highest teachings for recognizing mind.
After almost 6 years of searching and gaining a lot of experience by overcoming obstacles along the way, we finally found the perfect location, a property in Metula, which became ours in July 2020.

We couldn’t have a better opportunity than this place –
it is complete magic…
we have waited for so long,
we did many things along the way and finally, the Buddhas have rewarded us

Located at the northern tip of Israel

Metula (meaning Lookout) is the northernmost town in Israel, in an area often referred to as the “Finger of Galilea” – a piece of land pointing north, surrounded on the west, north and east by Israel’s borders with Lebanon.
It is small quiet town with a population 1,600, located at 550 metres above sea level, enjoying cooler summers than most of the country, surrounded by agricultural land, nature reserves, with springs and magnificent waterfalls falling into the river flowing in a deep valley alongside the town.

The Retreat Center

The Retreat Center is a detached house, built in a Swiss style on a large land plot of 2,000 M2. It is all constructed of natural wood and located on the corner of a quiet residential street with olive groves on one side with only bird song to be heard. The garden is mainly grass, with wild flowers growing freely, blooming in rainbow colours and some trees bearing mandarins, oranges and grapefruit are spread throughout.

Amazing place to develop your mind and meditate

The house is undergoing reconstruction by the Israeli sangha to create the facilities required. When complete in late 2020 the Israel Retreat Center will offer Diamond Way Buddhists from around the world a meeting place where one can deepen one’s Buddhist practices through programs of group and individual retreats and lectures by travelling teachers accommodated in a peaceful and tranquil environment especially selected by Lama Ole.

Israel retreat center in Metula is one of seven Diamond Way Buddhism centers in Israel. These centers are a part of a network of more than 700 meditation centers belonging to the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.

All of them were founded by Lama Ole Nydahl under the spiritual guidance of HH 17th Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje.

The centers function as non-profit organizations and operate based on friendship and idealism whereas the authentic teachings and the methods of the Buddha are transmitted there in an apprehensible and modern way allowing western people to incorporate them in their daily lives.
